RetroFox.com
Given that search engines spider text embedded within HTML web pages, I was curious if it were possible to optimize a single web page comprised mainly of a single Flash SWF file and minimal text. And so, with two spare hours on a lazy Sunday afternoon (while inspired by several Patrick Kenzie/Angela Gennaro novels by Dennis Lehane ), I designed a logo and splash image in Photoshop, dug up a free audio loop, and tossed it all into a Flash file for a mini-website about a fictional private investigation firm based in the Boston area.
Within the next three months, RetroFox.com found itself in the top three results for terms like Boston Private Investigators and Boston Private Detectives. For a brief period, I even received regular emails from independent investigators in the area -- who'd found the website on first search engine results page (SERPs) of Google -- looking to subcontract for my new non-existant firm! While the terms I optimized for weren't the most competitive terms in the world, I was still pleased that I managed to get a single page Flash site ranked so high. Over the next couple of years, Google got wise to the essentially content-less site and RetroFox.com steadily dropped out of the premier search results placements.
